4 Shaving Solution for Men

"shaving kit"

In prehistoric times men would shave with clam shells, flint knives or shark teeth (we’re not sure how, but according to Mentalfloss.com, this is documented). Fast forward to 2013– there is an incredibly advanced permanent hair reduction method– laser hair removal.  At Bay Harbour Med Spa (conveniently located between Miami, Miami Beach and Sunny Isles), we’ve successfully helped hundreds of men permanently reduce and abate ingrowns via our laser hair removal treatments.

We’d like to share with you some shaving solution tips (specific to men) which we hope will prove to be helpful to you:

  1. Men’s facial hair is thick and can be as resistant as copper wire. To ensure you make the shaving process less irritating to the skin, it is important to use a very dense shaving foam with the ability to soften the coarseness of a beard. Look for a shaving foam that offers a two-in-one benefit, providing skin soothing and hydrating benefits plus beard softening. Look for formulas rich in vitamin B-5 and aloe (aloe contains compounds which produce anti-inflammatory benefits).
  2. If your skin does develop an irritation accompanied by painful or hard bumps, this may be a condition called pseudofolliculitis barbae, which is more common in men with curly hair. This is when the facial hair grows back into the skin after shaving, causing the body’s immune system to act as if it was invaded. Although this sounds serious, folliculitis barbae and chronic post-shaving skin irritations can be brought under control; noting that when left untreated folliculitis barbae can lead to keloidal scarring of the skin (particularly in black skin). Regular use of a gentle foam scrub exfoliant will remove cellular overgrowth of the skin helping to uncoil the ingrown hairs.
  3. Traditional alcohol-laden aftershaves should be replaced with a toning lotion composed of aromatic essential oils. Look for lotions or products containing essential oils such as thyme and rosemary. These potent plant extracts contain botanical antimicrobial compounds to control the proliferation of bacteria. This will act as both an after shave and skin care treatment. A spray dispenser is recommended because the spray enables you to saturate the skin and quiet any burning or irritation.
  4. For persistent ingrown hair eruptions, seek out laser hair removal treatments.

Adopting healthy shaving practices is an important way for men to defend from the aging process because controlling the inflammation of shaving maintains the integrity of the extracellular matrix, or underlying skin support.
